The 9 Step Engineering Process

The engineering process is the set of steps that engineers must follow to create and construct products. There are a variety of models of the process of engineering that include fewer or more steps, but they all follow the same pattern. In this article, we will review a 9-step engineering design process that engineers employ to address specific issues.

The first step in the process of engineering design is to identify the issue. This is a critical step as failing to fully and precisely define the problem could result in delays later on in the design process. In many cases, the solution to a problem will naturally arise at this point. For example, when students were asked to think of a way to secure their lunch hooks to the desk’s bottom they came up with a straightforward solution of attaching a hook to the bottom of the desk.

In the next step, requirements analysis is performed to identify the specifics of the client’s requirements and resources. This will allow you to prepare a clear list of project requirements and limitations. For example when a client wants their new product to hold 20 pounds an engineer will estimate how much weight the system can hold and what the hook’s size should be so that it can accommodate all of the students’ full lunches.

The next stage, also known as design synthesis or design planning is when the details are defined and the precise design of the final product is developed. This includes the creation of connections, outputs, and inputs of the different modules that form the overall system. The tools used during this phase include Gantt and Pert charts and spreadsheets that load resources sketchbooks, drawings, and proof-of-concept models.
